GROUP DISCUSSIONS & RESEARCH

Take the next step!

Find a buddy or a group that you can discuss the issues with.

Who is doing what in your local area?
Make some enquiries with your local business people, service clubs,  farm communities, local government, food growers, etc.

Maybe you have some old newspaper clippings on these subjects, or you know someone who works in a related area. Are there debates in the media that you would like to have your say on? Can you suggest any relevant web links?

Find something you can start researching or putting into action ... and share updates on your research with others ... here on this website if you wish.

DEFINITION OF WATER FOR "CRITICAL HUMAN NEEDS"

What has happened since the Federal legislation was passed in December 2008 about the definition of water for "Critical Human Needs"?

Are there any measures in place to have public consultation about this new system of water rationing and economic re-structuring?

Read the latest summary on "Critical Human Needs" in the submission
made by Food Water / CFAWSA  to the federal Murray-Darling Basin Authority (dated 18 Dec 2009).

Is the proposed "Murray Darling Basin Plan" for 2011 being properly prepared with full input from grassroots communities?

VICTORIA

NORTHERN  SUSTAINABLE WATER STRATEGY (SWS) - PROGRESS AND MONITORING

This is the state government's so-called "50 Year Plan" for Northern Victoria's water.

About 160 public submissions were received in Dec 2008, and were  made available on the web in late Feb 2009.

The SWS was adopted by the Government with very few changes (if any)  in late 2009.

All issues raised in the CFAWSA submission remain outstanding.

The extraction of water from Northern Victoria to Melbourne via the North-South Pipeline commenced on 11 Feb 2010.
The shutdown of the northern irrigation system continues at full speed, under the guise of the "Foodbowl Modernisation Project".

COLIBAN WATER RELEASES DISCUSSION PAPER ON "CONTINGENCY WATER SOURCES" FOR LOOMING WATER CRISIS

On 3 March 2009, Coliban Water released a "Water Contingency Strategy" to provide a snapshot of water security options across its entire region.

What are the implications for Bendigo if the "Superpipe" from Lake Eildon runs dry? How soon could this happen, given the minimal inflows to our reservoirs? When might Bendigo run out of water?

The 35 page Coliban strategy involves discussion of trigger points for water restrictions and emergency measures, including use of groundwater.

How good is Coliban's planning? Should we be "alert but not alarmed?" Or something more?

Who in the community has read this document and understands its implications?

Coliban Media Release available here

Water Contingency Strategy avilable at  www.coliban.com.au  in the "Water Security" section.

BENDIGO STORMWATER RECYCLING - PROPOSAL FOR BENDIGO CREEK AND LAKE WEEROONA

This item
now has it's ...    OWN PAGE

Interest is growing in the  "harvesting" of the vast volumes of urban stormwater which currently leave Bendigo via the main Bendigo Creek.

Proposals have been put forward by private citizens, MPs, local Council, business and water authorities.

Stormwater reliability is high, even in drought years ... but is Bendigo too complacent with its "Superpipe" to harvest the opportunities on its doorstep?

Community input is needed to sift through the many options.

MAKING A TABLE-TOP MODEL OF THE CENTRAL VICTORIAN CATCHMENT

Who actually knows where Bendigo's water comes from?

All the pipelines, reservoirs, recycling plants, gold mines, rural channels and a Superpipe running  across the State .... how can ordinary folk keep track of it all?

Is it any wonder that people can be "baffled with bullshit" when it comes to water resources?

When people go to public meetings to "talk about water", wouldn't it be great to have a table-top model to show people the real scale of the situation?

"Oh, I never knew the water came from there !"

Would anyone be interested to bring together all the maps and to build a 3D (plaster?) model that could be transported in a car or minivan ... it could perhaps be  used by various community groups and as a great educational tool.

Just like "working from the same page" ... it helps to bring our knowledge out into the light for others to see.
